Central Grammar School has produced a fair number of pupils and staff who have had success in many fields – Entertainment and The Arts, Business, Sports and in Public Service.

  • John Lodge – CGS 1954 to 59 – Singer, Songwriter, Instrumentalist – Member of The Moody Blues – English rock band
  • Ron Ball – Police and Crime Commissioner  for Warwickshire from November 2012 – May 2016

  • Joseph Biddulph – Linguist, author and publisher
  • Bob Catley – Musician – Notably as lead singer of British Rock Band – Magnum
  • George Chandler – Librarian – Director General from 1974-80 of the National Library of Australia
  • Tony Garnett – Actor, Television and Film producer, produced the film This Life (1996–97)
  • John Harris – Businessman – Chairman from 1982-94 of East Midlands Electricity
  • Alec Hastilow CBE – Cricketer and Businessman – Chairman from 1962-8 of Smith & Nephew
  • Denver Hewlett – Businessman – Chief Executive since 1996 of Glen Dimplex Home Appliances
  • Trevor Jones – CGS 1941-46 – England and F.I.H International Hockey Umpire. Hon Sec. Great Britain Hockey Board 1982 – 4 (GB Men won the Bronze Medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Games)
  • Jeff Watson – Broadcaster and documentary maker and author, now in Sydney, Australia
  • Nicol Williamson – Shakespearian Actor
  • Colin Whittock – Cartoonist – known for his Cartoons in The Birmingham Mail, Punch, and many more
  • Anthony Armatrading – Actor – Stage and TV – Nationally known for his TV appearances BBC’s Casualty; brother of singer Joan Armatrading
  • Colin McFadyen (Teacher) – International Rugby Player – Moseley, England and British Lions
  • Sam Doble (Teacher)  –  International Rugby Player – Moseley and England
  • S.G. Ball – CGS 1912 to 1916 – Industrialist – In 1934 developed the Dunlop “65”, which became the world’s best selling golf ball
  • Bernie Wright – CGS 1964-69? – Professional Footballer – Played centre forward for Walsall, Everton, Bradford City and Port Vale 1971 to 80. 78 goals in 320 games.
  • Paul Tait – BKC 1982-87(?) Professional Footballer – Played for Birmingham City FC 1988 to 99.
